Entertaiment is a popular topic in news media, but how well do we understand the nuances and complexities of this sweeping subject matter? We set out to do so in the fall issue of T E News, and it was no small undertaking.

The word entertain is derived from the Middle French entretener, which itself is a variation on the Latin intertenere, meaning “hold inside.” Entertaiment is all-encompassing and includes many diverse activities.
