Entertaiment | The Cambridge Dictionary | Articles & Resources
The word entertainment is derived from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which means “to hold inside”; the prefix inter means “inside,” and the suffix tenere is related to the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch or keep up. Today, it encompasses a wide range of activities and can be adapted to suit a small group or an entire community: from the individual who selects his or her private entertainment from an enormous array of pre-recorded products; to banquets for two; to celebrations, religious festivals, and other performances designed for a large audience.
