Home Improvement Trends

Home improvement

Home improvement is a broad term for renovation work that improves the interior or exterior of a home, such as remodeling rooms or building additions. It can also refer to a particular style or technique, such as the renovation of an old house with new materials, or adding green features like energy-efficient windows and insulation.

Many homeowners undertake home improvement projects for a number of reasons. These include adding comfort, resale value or practicality, and increasing property tax deductions. Some home improvements are purely cosmetic in nature, while others may address safety or health issues. Some common home improvements include painting, flooring and plumbing upgrades. The aging baby boomers are fueling this trend, as they renovate their homes to better suit their lifestyle and increase the value of their retirement asset.

Adding extra bedrooms and bathrooms is one of the most popular ways to add value to a home. It is also a good way to accommodate a growing family. A kitchen remodel is another project that can dramatically improve a home’s functionality, while also making it more enjoyable to live in.

The popularity of television home improvement shows has fueled interest in DIY (do-it-yourself) projects. Home-center chains such as Lowe’s and Home Depot have expanded their businesses by offering a range of materials and tools to help consumers make their own improvements.

A good contractor should provide a written contract that includes a description of the work to be performed, and the dates when it will start and be substantially completed. The contract should also include the contractor’s name, address and MHIC license number. Consumers should only hire contractors who can provide proof of liability and worker’s compensation insurance.
