What Is Fashion?

Fashion is a cultural phenomenon that influences personal style, especially clothing. Fashion is a way of showing the world who you are, and it’s also a tool for generating a sense of community. It’s about the feeling you get when you put on a piece of clothing that makes you feel confident, happy and empowered. According to the experts, it’s also a great way to keep your mood on track as you can plan your wardrobe to boost your dopamine levels!

The word “fashion” derives from the French phrase meaning “new styles”. In modern society, fashion can be considered a cycle of new trends that are inspired by older ones. These trends may vary from person to person and they can also change over time. The styles of clothing may differ depending on a person’s social class, generation, occupation and geography. The trends may vary from dressy clothes for formal occasions to casual and sporty garments. In the past, special garments were worn to indicate one’s wealth and status in a culture. Examples include the embroidered robes worn by noblemen and women in Ancient Egypt, the embroidered silk dresses of Renaissance Italy or the feather cloaks of Hawaiian royalty.

In order to be considered as a fashion trend, a garment must have mass appeal and wide acceptance among the general public. This can be achieved through media, viral memes and celebrities who endorse or partake in the look. This process is often called the “trickle-down effect”. However, a trend can also spread from person to person in a different way; this is known as “bottom-up” or “bubble up” fashion.
