A diverting or amusing occupation for the mind or body; a distraction or diversion. Entertainment can be anything from a personal selection of music from a record store or digital download to the solutions to crossword puzzles to an elaborate performance intended for a public audience. It can be a ceremonial event, a celebration or religious festival; it may include food and drink and an array of activities. It can also have a serious purpose, as in various forms of education and enlightenment. The word derives from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which is derived from the Indo-European root ten.
